CHICAGO - HIMSS celebrates its 50th anniversary by honoring 50 health IT professionals, academicians and others with the 50 in 50 Award, recognition of memorable achievements to the field or body of knowledge of healthcare information technology and management systems. Ten individuals are recognized for each of the five decades since the founding of the organization in 1961.

Former HIMSS Board Chair (1982) and retired HIMSS member Justin Myrick, PhD, LFHIMSS, noted, “Our fellow members of HIMSS have worked tirelessly for 50 years to create and improve IT and management systems. It has been a labor of love for our members to provide tools for those medical professionals who give hands‐on quality care to people in need‐‐often during times of their greatest need. It is a privilege for me to have been a part of this outstanding group of HIMSS professionals for parts of four decades.”

Eligibility for the award looked at accomplishments during the particular decade of consideration for the candidate. Other eligibility requirements included:

  • Contributions to the field of health IT and management systems and to HIMSS and improvement of healthcare through technology; and
  • Professional accomplishments, contributions to the body of professional knowledge, thought leadership, and organizational leadership as well as HIMSS membership.

With the development and evolution of new member communities within HIMSS during the last 50 years, nominees also could demonstrate membership activity with HIMSS, or similar activity with any former organizations now part of HIMSS, such as:

  • Healthcare Management Systems Society ‐ HMSS
  • Center for Healthcare Information Management – CHIM;
  • Computer‐based Patient Record Institute – CPRI‐HOST
  • Midwest Alliance of Nursing Informatics – MANI;
  • Association for Electronic Health Care Transactions ‐ AFECHT; and
